Ujjain – The City of Kumbha Mela

bhy21Ujjain is popular all over the world for the largest gathering of Kumbh Mela that is held on the banks of Shipra River. The event is held once in every 12 years, and millions of participants come from all over the country to take part in the event. The city has different temples from different eras and is also known as the temple city of Madhya Pradesh. It also has the most ancient bathing ghat which goes by the name of Shri Ram Ghat. The city is also considered the Greenwich of India as the first Meridian of the longitude passes through it.

As it has numerous temples that are holiest places of faith for Hindus, it is always flooded with pilgrims. Due to the historical importance of the city, there are also many foreign tourists visiting this beautiful city round the year.

Mahakaleshwar temple of Ujjain

This is one of the Jyotirling in India, and you can have the wonderful darshan of Lord Shiva at this Temple. The Bhasma Aarti is the main attraction of the temple, and it is held in the early morning hours from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. If you are planning to visit the temple during this time, make sure that you wear traditional costumes like dhoti or saree as it is prescribed by the temple authorities. The temple is one of the most important destinations for the followers of Shaivism.

KaalBhairav temple

It is popularly believed that getting the blessings of Lord KaalBhairav will avoid sudden death and calamities in the family. For this reason, thousands of visitors from all over the country come to this place and offer liquor to the idol. This practice is something unique and usually not found in any other temple in the country.

The holy place of Kumbh Mela attracts millions of tourists during the Kumbh Mela. It is also called the Ganga of Ujjain, and even the aarti is conducted at the Ghat during the evening time. People believe that taking a bath in the Holy Ghat will remove the past sins and many pilgrims come to the place on a daily basis.

Bhartrihari Caves

The caves are situated on the Eastern Bank of Shipra River, and you can find various pilgrims from different parts of the country at this place. It is believed that Bhartrihari and other Yogis like Baba Gorakhnath did penance at this place. There are three caves in the premises of which one is closed for public.

Jantar Mantar of Ujjain

This is similar to the Jantar Mantar of Delhi and Jaipur and has many attractions for the visitors. Even though it is small in size when compared to the Jantar Mantar of Delhi, you will still find the best sky and stars light show at this place.
