Shawford duck race

Had a brilliant time at the Shawford duck race on Sunday.

We joined lots of people in the garden of the Bridge Pub early in the afternoon and we selected the right duck! We paid a pound and then had a drink in the sunshine for half an hour before making our way to the start line.

I can think of no better place to spend a Sunday afternoon, than on the leafy banks of the river Itchen in the Summer sunshine.

The cheers went up as over a thousand plastic yellow ducks made their way into the river, helped along by wading teenagers fully dressed and a few professional looking canoeists. ( They didn’t capsize, they were therefore professional!) (more…)

Bowling in Eastleigh, what a lot of fun!

We decided to go bowling in Eastleigh at the Swan Centre for the first time this week-end. You do need to pre book over the week-end as the slots go very quickly. If you go on a Sunday, parking if you are there for a couple of hours will be fixed at £2.50, so cheaper than the Saturday and the roads were lovely and quiet too.

I took my 12 year old daughter and it was great! A lot less stressful than taking a 12 year old clothes shopping. The shoe hire was part of the price and I pre booked a big pitcher of diet coke as I just thought it looked cool! I think the ticket price for us both for one game which was ample ( took about 30 minutes) was just under £10 so MUCH cheaper than an afternoon at the cinema.

Being a bit dim I asked for help to get us started but actually it was self explanatory you just tap in your name, if you can handle a mobile you can handle the bowling alley machine. (more…)

Advice on Co-Parenting During the Coronavirus

I wanted to give you some guidance and general advice on Co-Parenting During COVID-19, if you and the other parent every have any issues, consider consulting with a divorce lawyer for any legal assistance you may need.

1. Decision-Making: If you, a member of your household, or your child are diagnosed with COVID-19 immediately advise the other parent. Do not hide this information. Communicate with your child(ren)’s parent and agree on uniform practices in both households. For example, parents should confer with one another and agree upon uniform practices with the child(ren) in each household such as not having play dates or having children visit others outside outdoor activities at each home and communicating with extended family members via telephone/FaceTime. If you must convey information or diagnoses to your child that may alarm or upset your child, speak with the other parent to create a joint message before speaking with the child. (more…)

If you are then you really do need to understand what you can assign to that compost pile and what not to compost. Materials in Compost bins While most homes produce a lot of refuse that is indeed recyclable there are a number of materials that you should never add to any type of compost pile. Knowing the difference between compostable and non-compostable products will make your recycling efforts healthier, happier and more rewarding.

Let’s begin with human and animal waste products.

There are some sites that will give a cautious thumb’s up to dog waste, as long as you compost these types of materials very carefully. Ideally you will pass on the use of any human or dog waste because these types of waste products could very well contain diseases and parasites. If you add these types of contaminants to a compost pile it could infect all of the humus that is being created. (more…)

Compost Ratio Green and Brown

There may well be a perfect compost ratio green : brown, but compost in any proportions of green and brown will still decompose; it just takes longer. I have a one acre garden and nine compost heaps and none of them is the optimum five feet high. They work fine at just two feet high. I do not measure green and brown ratios either. When I have a bucket of vegetable peelings I throw it on. When I cut the grass I empty the mower’s grass collector onto the compost heap.

I am almost certain that this is what almost everyone in the real world does. I can understand the logic and that higher compost piles reach higher temperatures, but no way am I going to turn over a five foot high, two ton pile of compost in one day.

I even keep my leaves in separate compost bins rather than mixing them in the perfect 50:50 ratio with my mostly green compost. (more…)
