It seems that there are a burgeoning number of holiday makers who are no longer content with a little rest and relaxation and are looking for something more adventurous when they go abroad.
Research from the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has shown that adventure holidays are a growth industry as more and more people are looking to get active on their travels instead of lounging on a beach or watching the world go by from a bar. This is a trend that has also been noted by industry experts, who have also seen greater numbers of families and older travellers looking for adventure and excitement on their travels. So just what is the appeal of an adventure abroad?
Getting Away to Get Active
A hectic work and home life means there is less time for leisure, particularly time-consuming outdoor pursuits, so people are using their time away to get active and are booking fitness holidays abroad.
Being active abroad means that you can take part in any number of activities not available at home and maybe even learn new skills along the way. Or, if you enjoy things such as mountain biking, climbing and hiking, these can be done in different and more exciting locations.
And it’s not just adrenaline junkies looking for these kinds of holidays because more ordinary families are now going abroad for activity-filled adventures. This gives them a great chance to bond and do things together, since adults and children alike can all participate in things such as white-water rafting or mountain biking.
Sun, Sand or Snow
Another reason that adventure holidays are becoming ever more popular could be because there are so many different destinations and activities to choose from.
Summer holidays can involve anything from canyoning to kayaking or mountain walks to water sports and you don’t have to be super fit to take part – you can take adventure holidays at your own pace as you would any other break.
Winter holidays offer would-be adventurers the chance to participate in all the physical activities you would expect, such as skiing and snowboarding, as well as less energetic pursuits such as husky and reindeer safaris, ice fishing or trips to see the northern lights. An adventure holiday doesn’t necessarily have to involve non-stop physical exertion.
Same Adventures, Different Locations
If you are an active person who regularly takes part in outdoor pursuits, then an adventure holiday can still offer the same exciting experiences in a new and different landscape.
For instance, a trip to New Zealand means you can not only take in some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer, you can also take a dive off the world’s first bungee-jumping location, go white-water rafting, mountain climbing, sky diving or take part in pretty much any activity you can think of.
And it’s the same the world over. There are innumerable activities to take part in an endless variety of destinations, which is why adventure holidays are becoming so popular.
